The yellow lehua is a symbol of strength in Hawai'i, demonstrated by the ohia's ability to adapt to a great number of climatic zones. Whether its blossoms are red, yellow, orange, salmon or white, ohia can be found in the tropical rainforests of Hilo as well as the arid upper reaches of Mauna Kea. It is one of the first trees to take root after a lava flow has covered the land. The lehua is the flower of Hawai'i Island, and, along with its more plentiful cousin, red lehua, symbolizes the colors of Hawaiian royalty. Mamo, the Hawaiian honey creeper, provided the yellow feathers for the fine featherwork of the ali'i, hence the name lehua mamo.

In 1980 when the Theatre was built, a number of lehua mamo trees were planted on the grounds and dedicated to members of the community who were closely associated with the arts of Waimea.
